چکیده

The sorptivity S quantifies the effect of capillarity on liquid movement in a porous material. For liquid infiltration into an initially dry material, S is a parameter that is contingent on both liquid and material properties as well as the maximum liquid content behind the infiltrating front, hm. Scaling analyses are used to derive a dimensionless, intrinsic sorptivity S* that is constant for different liquids, Miller-similar materials and different values of hm. The analyses confirm that S is dependent on b , where b = cos/ is a measure of the wettability of the liquid. They also indicate a power law relationship between S and Se(av), the average liquid saturation behind the infiltrating front. Seventeen water and eleven Soltrol 220 horizontal infiltration experiments are reported in uniform, dry sand. Test results show that water is partially wetting in the sand. They also confirm that S / SeðavÞ, where d = 3.2 for the experimental conditions. The usefulness of a general, dimensionless Boltzmann variable is demonstrated to normalize infiltration profiles for the different liquids. An approximate method for sorptivity calculation is shown to provide an accurate estimate of S*. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Intrinsic Sorptivity and Water Infiltration into Dry Soil at Different Degrees of Saturation

The sorptivity S quantifies the effect of capillarity on liquid movement in a porous material. For liquid infiltration into an initially dry material, S is a parameter that is contingent on both liquid and material properties as well as the maximum liquid content behind the infiltrating front, θm. In prior work, Culligan et al. (2005) used scaling analyses to derive a dimensionless, intrinsic s...

Analysis of short-time single-ring infiltration under falling-head conditions with gravitational effects

Analytical solutions of the flow equation for infiltration offer an interesting tool for the hydrodynamic characterization of non-saturated soils by optimization of the hydraulic conductivity, Kfs, and the capillary sorptivity, So. However, the experimental conditions have to satisfy the governing assumptions. For falling head infiltration tests the initial water height, Ho, is a third unknown ...

Effect of tillage and water pressure head on the hydraulic properties of a loamy soil surface

The effect of different tillage practices on soil hydraulic properties was studied in a mature, drip irrigated apricot orchard with a 7% slope, in Murcia (SE Spain). The soil had a loamy texture. Three soil tillage treatments were applied between the rows of trees: 1) control treatment (non-tilled, although weeds were cut to ground level using a blade attached to a tractor following the common ...

Infiltration with controlled air escape

Infiltration into the soil is restricted if the movement of displaced air is hampered. In this study, separate infiltration experiments were performed where the air could escape only through capillary glass tubes (three different diameters were used). Control experiments, where the air movement was not restricted, were performed also. During the experiments both air pressure and the cumulative ...
